Bedford residents warned: Why batteries and vapes are causing fires
A recent fire at the Elstow depot has prompted Bedford Borough Council to issue an urgent safety warning regarding the disposal of batteries and vapes. The incident, which occurred while staff were loading a collection vehicle, serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed when hazardous items are placed in standard household waste.
While no injuries were reported, the event highlights a growing issue in waste management. When batteries or vapes are crushed or damaged within collection vehicles or processing facilities, they can easily ignite, threatening the safety of collection crews and causing significant damage to vital infrastructure. This comes only a year after a major fire resulted in the total loss of the Elstow facility, which is currently in its initial rebuilding phase.

How to dispose of batteries safely
Household batteries should never be placed inside black bins or recycling containers. To ensure they are collected safely, residents are asked to follow this process:

- Collect household batteries—including AA, AAA, C, D, 6V, 9V, and button cells—in a small, clear plastic bag.
- Seal the bag once it is full.
- Place the sealed bag on top of your black bin or orange-lidded recycling bin on your scheduled collection day.
Collection crews are equipped to handle these items separately, preventing them from entering the main waste stream where they could cause a fire.

Proper disposal of vapes
Like batteries, vapes represent a significant fire hazard and must be kept out of general waste and street litter bins. If you use disposable vapes, you should utilize the take-back services provided by retailers, as they are legally required to facilitate the safe disposal of these products. Alternatively, vapes can be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre on Barkers Lane, Bedford.
By following these disposal methods, residents play a direct role in preventing service disruptions and protecting the waste management staff who keep the borough running.
