Arbroath families face court date in child death case

Police Scotland has officially confirmed the identity of the nine-year-old girl who died following an incident in Arbroath as Minnie Merriman. A 35-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with her death. He is scheduled to appear at Forfar Sheriff Court on Wednesday, 5 August 2026.

Circumstances of the investigation

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, 3 August 2026. At approximately 12.02am, emergency services were called to the Elliot Industrial Estate, where Minnie was discovered with serious injuries. She was subsequently transported to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee for emergency treatment, but she sadly passed away shortly thereafter.

Police Scotland has confirmed that the victim and the 35-year-old suspect were known to each other. Following the arrest, authorities have stated that they are not currently seeking any other individuals in connection with the investigation. The inquiry is being led by the Major Investigation Team, and a visible police presence is expected to remain in the Arbroath area while officers continue their work at the scene.

Minnie Merriman was visiting the Arbroath area from West Yorkshire with her family, who were camping in the region at the time of the incident. In a statement released through Police Scotland, her family expressed their profound grief, describing her as their “beloved, absolutely incredible, beautiful and brave Minnie Moo.” The family has requested that their privacy be respected as they navigate this period of bereavement. Specialist officers have been assigned to provide ongoing support to the family members.
