Households across Adur and Worthing will begin weekly food waste collections from September 2026, although not every address will start at the same time. Containers and instructions will arrive before each household’s first collection under the government’s Simpler Recycling programme.

Residents do not need to register or contact the council. Each address in the first phase will receive its specific start date with its starter pack.

September collections will start in phases

Adur and Worthing Councils are sending letters to households due to join the service in September. Deliveries of food waste containers, compostable liners and instruction leaflets will begin during August.

Anyone who receives neither a letter nor a starter pack in August will be included in phase two. The councils have not yet given a date for that phase and say affected households will be contacted later.

Houses and flats will receive different outdoor bins

Every home will receive a small caddy for collecting food waste in the kitchen. The outdoor container depends on the property type:

Houses will receive a 23-litre grey bin with an orange lockable lid.
Flats will use a shared 140-litre wheeled bin with an orange lid, kept in the communal bin store.
Starter packs will also contain a leaflet and a roll of compostable liners.

Plate scrapings, peelings and tea bags go in the caddy

Residents should put leftover food such as plate scrapings, peelings and tea bags into the kitchen caddy instead of the general waste bin. Once the caddy is full, its contents should be transferred to the household’s outdoor food bin or the shared bin provided for flats.

Adur environment cabinet member Andrew Harvey said the food waste bin would be emptied every week once collections begin, “no matter how little it contains”.

Existing bin collection days will not change

Food waste will be collected weekly on the same day as either the recycling or general waste collection. Residents’ current collection days will remain unchanged, with smaller vehicles being used for the new service.

The collected material will be taken to a processing plant near Horsham and treated through anaerobic digestion. This converts the waste into biofertiliser for local farms and renewable energy, with surplus power exported to the national grid.

Worthing environment cabinet member Martin McCabe said separating food waste may also help households see how much they discard and reduce waste over time.

Wait for the start date supplied with your pack

Residents should continue using their existing bins until the address-specific start date arrives. A missing letter or starter pack in August means the household is scheduled for phase two, rather than the September launch.
