Shropshire cost-of-living drop-ins offer free help

Shropshire residents worried about household bills, essential costs or a sudden financial shock can get free face-to-face help through Shropshire Local and Shropshire Local Mobile Support Services.

The drop-in support is aimed at residents across Shropshire who need practical help with the rising cost of living, including advice on the Crisis and Resilience Fund, housing support, heating oil support, council tax, benefits and other council services.

The regular in-person service is available at The Guildhall in Shrewsbury on weekdays from 9.30am to 5pm. It is also available at Ludlow Library on weekdays, except Thursdays, from 9.30am to 5pm. Shropshire Local Mobile also visits communities around the county, including Broseley, Oswestry, Whitchurch, Shifnal, Market Drayton, Albrighton, Highley and Bishop’s Castle.

The service is free and operates as a drop-in route for residents who want to speak to someone directly.

Weekday support in Shrewsbury and Ludlow

Shropshire Local is running from two fixed locations: The Guildhall in Shrewsbury and Ludlow Library. Both are designed to give residents a place to sit down with an adviser and talk through what help may be available.

At The Guildhall, residents can attend on weekdays between 9.30am and 5pm. At Ludlow Library, the service runs on weekdays except Thursday, also between 9.30am and 5pm.

The council says the support is for people who may be struggling with essential living costs, including those on low incomes and those facing a sudden financial shock. The Crisis and Resilience Fund can include crisis payments, housing support and heating oil support for eligible households.

A key point for residents is that the fund may still be available even if someone does not receive benefits. Advisers can help people understand what they may be entitled to and support them with applications where needed.

Mobile drop-ins across Shropshire

For residents who cannot easily get to Shrewsbury or Ludlow, Shropshire Local Mobile takes face-to-face advice to communities across the county.

The mobile drop-ins visit locations including Broseley, Oswestry, Whitchurch, Shifnal, Market Drayton, Albrighton, Highley and Bishop’s Castle. Dates and exact locations vary, so residents are asked to check the Shropshire Local Mobile information before planning a visit.

The mobile service has the same basic purpose as the fixed drop-ins: to make it easier to talk to an adviser in person, rather than having to work out online forms or council services alone.

The wider cost-of-living support available through Shropshire Council includes help with council tax, benefits, free school meals, Blue Badges, concessionary travel, energy costs and money worries.

Help with applications and wider money worries

Councillor Sarah Marston, Shropshire Council’s portfolio holder for communities and environment, said many residents are still feeling pressure from higher household costs and may not know where to turn.

She said Shropshire Local and Shropshire Local Mobile help make support easier to access, whether someone needs advice, help with an application, or information about the Crisis and Resilience Fund, including heating oil support.

Veena Grundmanis, Shropshire Local team leader, said many people do not know what benefits and services they are entitled to. She said the team takes time to talk through what is bothering residents and can often point people towards other forms of help as well as the service they first ask about.

“There’s never any rush,” she said, describing the work as listening closely, helping with applications and showing people how to access services online where needed.

What to know before going

The support is for Shropshire residents who are worried about money, struggling with essential costs, or unsure what council help they may be able to access.

There is no price listed for attending. The service is described as a drop-in route, with face-to-face help available at The Guildhall in Shrewsbury, Ludlow Library on its listed weekdays, and through the mobile team when it visits local areas.

Residents can find out more about cost-of-living help through Shropshire Council’s website, by contacting Shropshire Local, or by speaking to the Shropshire Local Mobile team when it visits their area.
