Plymouth residents will be able to try trains, buses, guided walking, adaptive cycling and bike checks during a free five-day Better Transport Week programme from Monday 15 June to Friday 19 June.
The events are being run by Plymouth City Council and Plymotion with partners at locations across the city, including Plymouth Rail Station, Armada Way, Royal Parade, Brickfields Athletics Track, Coypool and Royal William Yard. Most activities are drop-in, while the Wembury Beach guided walk and Ice Trike taster sessions require booking by email.
Cost is free. The programme is aimed at the general public, including people looking for greener everyday travel options, residents who want journey advice, and anyone interested in accessible cycling or bus travel.
Five days across Plymouth, from rail advice to bike checks
Better Transport Week is a national campaign focused on sustainable transport. In Plymouth, the local programme has been built around a different travel theme each day, with activities designed to give people practical experience rather than just information leaflets.
The week starts on Monday 15 June with Train Day at the city’s main rail station on North Road. Plymotion will host a stand there from 9.30am to 3.30pm, offering general travel advice and information on incentives for making rail travel part of a journey.
Tuesday’s Bus Day moves to the Armada Way piazza, where a bus accessibility event will run from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Representatives from the Plymouth Bus Partnership will be available to talk about journey support, while visitors can explore the latest buses, try a mobility scooter and take part in activities, games and giveaways.
Wembury Beach walk and cycling sessions need early planning
Walk Day on Wednesday 17 June is one of the more structured parts of the programme. Participants will take a bus from the city centre to Heybrook Bay before joining a five-kilometre guided coastal walk to Wembury Beach, followed by a picnic and return journey.
Anyone joining that activity should meet at 10.20am at the A14 stop on Royal Parade. Places must be reserved by the published contact details.
Thursday 18 June is Bike Day, with two different ways to take part. An adaptive e-cycling session will run at Brickfields Athletics Track from 10.30am to midday, delivered with British Cycling and Plymouth Active. No booking is required for that session.
Later the same day, Ice Trike taster sessions will depart from Plymouth Bike Hire at Coypool at 1.30pm and 2.30pm. The trike is described by the organisers as a low-to-the-ground, three-wheeled electric bike designed for comfort and stability. Booking is required for those sessions by the published contact details.
Royal William Yard hosts the final business travel day
The final event, Business Day, takes place on Friday 19 June on the green at Royal William Yard from 9am to 4pm.
Bikespace’s Dr Bike service will offer free safety checks and minor repairs. Plymotion will also be there with advice and incentives linked to walking, cycling and bus travel across Plymouth.
Councillor John Stephens, Cabinet Member for Strategic Transport and Planning, said the week was about celebrating greener, more environmentally friendly and accessible ways to get around the city. He said there were “plenty of options in Plymouth” and encouraged people to come to the events for advice or to try them out.
