Leicester teenagers can spend five days developing two short films at Phoenix Film Camp, which starts at 9am on Monday 3 August 2026. The camp is for ages 13–16 and takes place at Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre, 4 Midland Street, Leicester, LE1 1TG.

The Visit Leicester Events listing marks the camp as free and says booking is open. Further information will be sent to attendees closer to the start date.

  • Start: 9am on Monday 3 August 2026
  • Venue: Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre, Leicester
  • Who can attend: Young filmmakers aged 13–16
  • Cost: Listed as free
  • Format: A five-day filmmaking camp producing two short films

Two filmmaking challenges in one week

Participants will receive a line of dialogue and a prop at the beginning of the camp. They will then have two days to write and produce a film before changing roles and completing the process again.

That structure gives each attendee opportunities to work across different parts of production rather than remaining in one position for the week. The programme covers scriptwriting, shooting, directing and editing, with the group working against a set deadline to complete both films.

All equipment and training will be provided. Filmmaker Keith Allott will lead the tuition, and the completed films will be prepared for a premiere screening at Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre in the autumn.

A practical introduction to several film roles

The camp is designed around hands-on production. Instead of concentrating only on film theory, attendees move from an initial creative prompt through writing, filming and post-production topics while contributing to finished projects.

Swapping roles after the first film allows participants to experience a different responsibility during the second challenge. The source does not specify how individual roles will be assigned, but confirms that the programme has been designed with different learning styles in mind.

The editing arrangements have two parts: editing is among the production skills covered during the camp, while the tutor will edit the completed films in preparation for their autumn screening.

Bring a nut-free lunch and check the final timetable

Lunch is not provided. Attendees may bring a packed lunch, but it must be nut-free. Phoenix says more information about this arrangement will be sent closer to the camp.

The published listing confirms the 9am start on 3 August and describes the programme as a five-day camp, but it does not provide the final date, daily finishing times, transport guidance or accessibility details. Parents and attendees should check those points with Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre when booking or when the pre-camp information arrives.

The listing also states that cancellations are generally non-refundable except in exceptional circumstances. If an advertised course is withdrawn, the organiser says it will endeavour to provide seven days’ notice and issue a full refund. Event information may change, so the final booking details supplied by the venue should be checked before attendance.
