The annual reading programme is delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with libraries, with North Northamptonshire Council promoting local participation.
This year’s Read to the Beat theme links books with music, rhythm, sound and culture. The theme has been developed in partnership with Universal Music Group UK and is designed to encourage children to keep reading over the summer holidays while school routines are paused.
Families elsewhere in the country are also being directed towards local library reading schemes, including a similar free Summer Reading Challenge for Cheshire West children.
How the challenge works in local libraries
Children can sign up for free at their local North Northamptonshire library from 4 July, except at Kettering Library where sign-up begins from 6 July.
When they join, children receive a sticker collector card. Main Challenge participants also receive a Read to the Beat StoryTime magazine.
Participants are encouraged to read six books over the summer. For each book read, they collect stickers, with finishers receiving a certificate and medal. Preschool children completing the mini challenge receive a special finisher sticker.
For 2026, children taking part in the main Challenge can also complete 12 individualised optional challenges. These are in addition to the six-book reading target and are intended to give children more ways to stay engaged during the school holiday period.
Music, storytelling and free library activities
North Northamptonshire libraries are also linking the reading challenge with free activities through the summer.
The council says local events will include drumming workshops, silent discos, storytelling sessions and make-your-own-instrument workshops. Families are being directed to the council’s library events listings to find activities close to them.
The Summer Reading Challenge has been running for more than 25 years and is aimed at helping children read for pleasure, build confidence and maintain reading skills outside the classroom.
For parents and carers, the practical appeal is straightforward: it gives children a free summer activity based around local libraries, with rewards along the way and no requirement to buy books.
A related free summer reading challenge in Derby shows how libraries are using the same national programme to keep children reading through the holiday period.
What to do before turning up
Families should visit their local North Northamptonshire library to sign up from Saturday 4 July. Those using Kettering Library should wait until Monday 6 July because of the temporary two-day closure on Friday 3 July and Saturday 4 July.
The challenge is also included in this year’s Movement and Xplorer Journal, available from local libraries. Further details about the Summer Reading Challenge and associated events are available by asking at a local library branch or checking the libraries page on the North Northamptonshire Council website.
