Speeches, music and a picnic on Wimbledon Common
The programme is built around the public parade through Wimbledon Village, followed by a gathering at the War Memorial. After the speeches, the focus moves to Wimbledon Common for live music and a community picnic.
The event is aimed at the general public as well as military personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets, youth organisations and families. No booking details were given in the council notice.
Merton’s event sits alongside other local Armed Forces Day gatherings around the country, including a free Armed Forces Day programme in Oldbury, where residents are also being given parade and public attendance details.
New Armed Forces Champion appointed before the event
The parade comes as Councillor Nedra Daniel has been appointed Merton’s Armed Forces Champion, taking over from former councillor Dennis Pearce.
The role is designed to act as a voice, advocate and first point of contact within the council for the Armed Forces community. That includes veterans, serving personnel, reservists and military families.
Daniel served in the Royal Navy from 2007 to 2017 after moving to the UK from St. Vincent and the Grenadines at the age of 25. During her decade of service, she was posted to HMS Ark Royal, HMS Illustrious and HMS Defender.
She said it was an honour to take on the role for Merton’s Armed Forces community, adding that her naval service had shaped her values and given her insight into the challenges faced by servicemen and servicewomen.
Support for veterans, personnel and families
As Armed Forces Champion, Daniel will also promote the Armed Forces Covenant, to which the council is a signatory, and raise awareness of duties linked to the Armed Forces Act 2021, the NHS constitution and other relevant legislation.
She said she wanted to focus on access to housing, health, employment and wellbeing support for those who have served and for their families.
Councillor Ross Garrod, Leader of Merton Council, said Daniel’s ten years in the Royal Navy made her the right candidate for the role. He also thanked Dennis Pearce for his years of service in the post and Councillor Shuile Syeda for her support over the past year.
For residents planning to attend, the confirmed details are simple: arrive for the 12 noon parade from Lingfield Road to the War Memorial in Wimbledon Village, then follow the programme to speeches, live music and the community picnic on Wimbledon Common from 12.30pm.
