What audiences can expect from The Debut

Written and directed by Eisenberg, The Debut centres on a shy woman who is unexpectedly cast in a local production of an original musical. Under the influence of its strong-willed and enigmatic director, she becomes increasingly absorbed in both her role and the high-stakes world surrounding the community theatre production.

The ensemble includes Eisenberg, Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti, Halle Bailey, Havana Rose Liu, Bernadette Peters, Colton Ryan, Lilli Cooper, Maulik Pancholy and Bonnie Milligan. Eisenberg and members of the cast are expected to attend the London premiere.

The gala also marks Eisenberg’s return to the festival after presenting A Real Pain there in 2024. In the British Film Institute’s announcement, festival artistic director Kristy Matheson described The Debut as “deliriously funny and heartfelt” and highlighted its performances and sharp script.

The October screening offers festival audiences the first opportunity to see the film at its UK premiere. Those unable to secure gala tickets will have another confirmed opportunity when Lionsgate releases The Debut in UK cinemas on 15 January 2027.

How the closing gala fits into the 2026 festival

The BFI London Film Festival runs from Wednesday 7 October to Sunday 18 October 2026, with the The Debut premiere serving as its final gala. Royal Festival Hall is the festival’s gala venue, while other parts of the programme will be presented at BFI Southbank, BFI IMAX and four partner cinemas in London’s West End.
