Free Xplorer Wednesdays Turn Maldon Walks Into a Challenge
Families and children can drop in to the free Xplorer Engagement Stand at Promenade Park, Park Drive, Maldon, CM9 5JQ, from Wednesday, 22 July. The stand will operate every Wednesday during the school summer holidays from 10am to 4pm, with no booking required.
Maldon District Council is running the weekly sessions to show visitors how the outdoor navigation game works. Families can meet the team, learn how to participate and find out about other ways to get active across the district.
A park walk built around markers and questions
Xplorer is a family-friendly navigation game created by British Orienteering. Designed especially for children and families, it introduces the basic ideas behind orienteering through a series of simple challenges in parks and open spaces.
Participants explore the park, look for markers and answer questions along the way. The format turns an ordinary walk into a structured activity while giving younger visitors a chance to practise navigation and observation skills with family or friends.
Taking part is completely free. The programme is being delivered by Maldon District Council with funding from Active Maldon, the council’s health and wellbeing initiative supporting greater use of local parks, open spaces and community facilities.
Councillor Simon Morgan, leader of Maldon District Council, said Xplorer was intended to help young people and families spend more time outside, learn new skills and remain active during the school holidays. He also highlighted the value of providing activities without a participation charge.
Wednesday drop-in sessions explain how Xplorer works
The engagement stand is intended for families who want guidance before taking part. Council staff will be available between 10am and 4pm each Wednesday to explain the activity and help visitors understand what they need to do around the park.
There is no booking process for the Promenade Park stand: visitors can arrive during its operating hours. The council announcement does not include separate transport or accessibility guidance, so families requiring those details will need to check for further information before travelling.
The stand will remain a weekly fixture throughout the school summer holidays, although the council has not published a specific final Wednesday for the sessions. The supplied event schedule runs through the end of August.
Riverside Park dates have yet to be confirmed
Xplorer is also planned for Riverside Park, extending the programme beyond Promenade Park. Dates for in-person engagement sessions there have not yet been announced, and the council says they will be published through its social media channels.
Parish and town councils can also seek Active Maldon funding to introduce Xplorer in their own communities and green spaces. Local organisations interested in that support can discuss the application process with the council’s health and wellbeing team, while residents waiting for Riverside Park dates should monitor the council’s updates.
