Free Cabinet of Curiosity tours Leicester neighbourhoods
Leicester’s Cabinet of Curiosity Travelling Museum is bringing museum treasures and local heritage objects to shopping centres, libraries, parks and festivals until 5 September 2026. Created by Leicester Museums & Galleries, the free, drop-in exhibition is open to the general public at locations across the city.
The travelling museum moves objects beyond conventional gallery walls and into places residents may already be visiting. Its mix of familiar and unexpected items is intended to encourage people to explore local heritage up close, handle objects and share their own stories.
The seven Leicester tour dates and locations
The programme began with two days at Riverside Festival on Bede Island. Its schedule then moved through neighbourhood venues, shopping centres and major city gatherings, ending at Pride in Abbey Park.

The programme alternates between Pop-Up Museum appearances and Doorstep Museum sessions. Pop-ups bring museum objects into busy public settings such as Highcross and Beaumont shopping centres and city festivals. The Doorstep Museum develops that idea at neighbourhood level, with an emphasis on local connections, shared stories and the heritage and creativity found within communities.

What visitors can expect from the travelling museum
The Cabinet is designed around close, hands-on encounters with museum collections rather than a conventional gallery visit.
