England’s Test reset begins with Fleming and Root

Stephen Fleming has been appointed England Men’s Test Head Coach, with Joe Root returning as captain ahead of the team’s next major challenge: the winter tour of South Africa.

The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed the appointments after a selection process involving several high-quality candidates. Fleming’s role will begin after the upcoming Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan, with Marcus Trescothick serving as interim head coach during that series.

Fleming brings a record of sustained success

Fleming, 53, is regarded as one of the most experienced coaches in world cricket. He spent 18 years associated with Chennai Super Kings and led the franchise to a record five Indian Premier League titles. His teams reached the IPL final 10 times.

His coaching experience also includes Southern Brave, whom he guided to The Hundred men’s final in 2023, as well as CSK affiliate teams in South Africa and the United States and the Melbourne Stars.

Fleming also brings considerable experience as a player and captain. He played 111 Tests for New Zealand and remains the country’s longest-serving Test captain, having led the side in 80 matches and overseen 28 victories. In county cricket, he played for Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, captaining Nottinghamshire to their first County Championship title in 2005 after a long wait.

He said his aim would be to build on the progress made under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes while helping England’s younger players develop. Fleming specifically identified Harry Brook’s continued development and leadership as an important part of the team’s future.

Root returns to lead England’s next phase

Root will work alongside Fleming after being named Test captain again. The Yorkshire batter holds England’s records for most Tests captained, with 65, and most wins, with 27.

His first spell as captain ran from 2017 to 2022. He later returned to the role on an interim basis during England’s Test series against New Zealand at the Kia Oval earlier this summer, giving him a brief opportunity to work again in the leadership position.

Root said the captaincy remained a difficult but rewarding responsibility and that he was motivated by the chance to lead a new generation of players. He also pointed to Fleming’s long record as a leader and his knowledge of the game as reasons for welcoming the partnership.

The change gives England a coaching and captaincy combination with extensive international and domestic experience. It also places Root back in charge as the team prepares for a new period following McCullum’s tenure.

Pakistan series comes before South Africa tour

Fleming will not take charge immediately. Trescothick will remain interim head coach for the Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan, allowing Fleming time to spend with his family in New Zealand after ending his long association with Chennai Super Kings earlier this month.

Fleming is expected to travel to the UK later this summer to begin preparations for England’s winter Test tour of South Africa. The ECB said the appointment is intended to help the team convert its potential into sustained success.

England Men’s Cricket Managing Director Rob Key said Fleming was the best person to guide a side with significant potential, while ECB chief executive Richard Gould described him as one of the world’s leading coaches. The first confirmed step in the new set-up will therefore come under Trescothick, before Fleming begins work ahead of South Africa.
