Cardiff parents face an earlier school deadline: what residents need to know

Cardiff families applying for a secondary school place for September 2027 will have less time than previous cohorts to make their choices. Applications open on Friday 4 September 2026 and must be submitted by Friday 30 October 2026.

The Welsh Government has brought the national application window forward. Children currently in Year 5 will therefore need their applications completed during the first term of Year 6, making the summer holidays a useful time for parents and carers to research schools and prepare the required information.

Applications submitted by the deadline receive consideration through Cardiff Council’s coordinated admissions process. Families should use the council’s Coordinated Admissions application form for all applications to Cardiff high schools.

The online form allows parents to include community schools and participating partner schools in one application. Anyone applying to a faith-based school may also have to submit a supplementary form obtained from that school’s website; this does not replace the council application.

Using all five preferences strengthens an application

Parents can name five school preferences on the application form, and Cardiff Council is urging families to use every available choice. Naming only one school can significantly reduce the prospect of receiving an offer from among the family’s preferred options.

Even where one school is the clear favourite, the remaining spaces should be used for realistic alternatives. The application should also include relevant details requested by the council, including whether the child has a sibling at a school and any additional learning, medical or social needs.

Cabinet Member for Education Sarah Merry said families should begin considering their options earlier because of the revised national timetable. She described using all five preferences as one of the most valuable steps parents can take before submitting the form.

School research should include the daily journey

Cardiff’s secondary schools hold open evenings, while their websites and Estyn inspection reports can help families compare their options. Parents should contact a school directly if its open-evening date is not included in the 2027/28 admissions booklet.

Travel arrangements need to be considered alongside educational preferences. Free home-to-school transport is available only when a secondary pupil lives at least three miles from the appropriate catchment-area school.

If that catchment school is full, free transport is provided only to the next-nearest appropriate school with an available place. A place at a preferred school does not automatically mean the journey will qualify for council-funded transport.

Welsh-medium education remains open to every family

Welsh-medium secondary education is available whether a family speaks Welsh or English at home. It is also open to children who have not attended a Welsh-medium primary school.

Cardiff’s Welsh-language immersion unit, Uned Drochi Iaith Caerdydd, helps learners develop the language skills needed to enter Welsh-medium education. According to the council, the service has supported nearly 500 children and young people since 2010.

Prepare the application before September

Families can use the summer break to shortlist five schools, review Estyn reports, check open evenings and examine the journey from home. They should also gather information about siblings and any additional needs so that these details are ready when the application window opens.

Cardiff Council provides step-by-step admissions guidance and a child-friendly animation explaining the process. Information is available in Welsh and several community languages, including Arabic, Bengali, Cantonese, Czech, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Somali and Ukrainian.

Families who are uncertain about any part of the application can seek support from council staff at Cardiff Hubs or call C2C on 029 2087 2087 before the 30 October deadline.
