Bolton baby support clears its first quality test

Peer-to-peer help, digital resources and preparation sessions for parenthood and breastfeeding are among the services offered through Bolton’s Best Start Family Hubs. The network has now achieved stage one status under the Baby Friendly Initiative run by the UK Committee for UNICEF, also known as UNICEF UK.

The recognition covers work delivered by Bolton Council, Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, Bolton Together, Bolton CVS and Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.

Stage one recognises the foundations behind family support

The first stage examines the culture behind the service and the knowledge, skills and care provided by staff. It is an initial milestone rather than full accreditation: further assessments are expected over several years, with the highest possible level being the Gold Award.

Vicky Davies, specialist health visitor and infant feeding co-ordinator for the hubs, said the status recognised the foundation established for work towards full accreditation. She thanked hub staff for their part in reaching the first stage.

Support covers feeding choices and early family bonds

The Baby Friendly Initiative encourages breastfeeding and close parent-child relationships. Bolton Council’s announcement cited protection against infections and several longer-term health risks among the benefits associated with breastfeeding.

Councillor Rabiya Jiva, Bolton Council’s executive cabinet member for children’s services, said local support includes antenatal preparation, peer-to-peer sessions and digital resources. She added that the hubs aim to help every mother and baby develop a close bond regardless of feeding choice.

Existing help remains available across Bolton

The announcement does not set out changes to eligibility, venues or opening arrangements following the award. Families can continue accessing hub services at venues across the borough and consult Bolton Council’s Guide to Services and Activities for Families in Bolton for details.

Services cover families with children up to age 19, extending to age 25 for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities. The next confirmed step is continued work towards full Baby Friendly accreditation through further UNICEF assessments.
