Bishop’s Castle Is Open: four days of free pop-ups
Bishop’s Castle Is Open will turn vacant shops and underused buildings along Bishop’s Castle High Street into temporary creative spaces from 3 to 6 September. The four-day event is free and open to the public, with local residents and visitors attending the annual Michaelmas Fair among those invited to explore it.
Pop-up shops, exhibitions, workshops and other creative activities will be spread across various empty premises rather than centred on a single venue. The event has been timed to coincide with the fair, adding another reason to walk through the town centre during its September programme.
Pop-up shops and workshops across the High Street
Artists, makers and participating businesses will occupy spaces that would otherwise remain empty. Confirmed attractions include exhibitions, workshops, creative activities and a Lush pop-up, although a unit-by-unit programme has not yet been provided.
The project began with conversations between Bex Hunter of The Castle Hotel and Deb Alma of the Poetry Pharmacy. Both were concerned by the growing number of empty properties in Bishop’s Castle and began considering how those buildings could be used again.
Their idea developed with support from Shropshire Growth Hub, which has experience of temporary retail through the Shropshire Artisan Showcase in Shrewsbury. That initiative allows makers and creative businesses to test products in a pop-up setting while bringing activity into the town centre.
How temporary use gives empty shops a purpose
The project is based on the idea of “meanwhile spaces”: vacant buildings or commercial units used temporarily between tenancies or before redevelopment. These arrangements can provide space for businesses, artists and community organisations while returning activity and visibility to otherwise unused premises.
For participating traders and makers, a short-term shop can offer a chance to test an idea, meet customers and build confidence without establishing a permanent outlet. For visitors, the changing use of familiar High Street buildings creates a trail of shops and activities to discover during the four-day event.

Hunter said the response from artists, makers and property owners had been strong. She described the event as a pilot that is already demonstrating how empty buildings can support creative enterprise and give visitors more to explore.
A Bishop’s Castle pilot with wider ambitions
Shropshire Growth Hub officer Anna Sadler said previous temporary retail initiatives had helped businesses test concepts and reach new customers. The hub is working with Hunter and Alma on the Bishop’s Castle project as part of its support for local businesses.
Organisers hope the pilot will show whether temporary occupation can bring empty spaces back into productive use. Its results may also give other Shropshire towns a model to consider when responding to vacant shops and underused buildings.
What visitors need before setting out
