Belfast City Hall adds Micky Murray portrait to civic collection
A new portrait of former Lord Mayor Micky Murray has been unveiled at Belfast City Hall, marking the latest addition to the building’s historic collection of mayoral artworks.
The artist and the sitter
The portrait, created by local artist Mel Carroll, was commissioned as part of the council’s ongoing initiative to support and showcase Belfast’s creative talent. Councillor Micky Murray, who served as the city’s First Citizen starting in June 2024, is the latest figure to be immortalised in the collection. The project continues a long-standing civic tradition that allows each outgoing Lord Mayor to collaborate with a local artist to commemorate their term in office.
Public viewing and collection history
The new piece is now on display within City Hall, hanging alongside portraits of previous Lord Mayors. The collection serves as a visual record of the city’s leadership and includes works by notable artists such as Colin Davidson, Robert Ballagh, and Nicola Russell.
Members of the public can view the portrait during the building’s daily tours, which attract thousands of visitors annually. The unveiling took place on the evening of 9 September 2026.
