Northcote Road is set to lose its weekend traffic and gain outdoor tables, shoppers and a festival crowd as Battersea’s summer pedestrianisation scheme returns.

The Northcote Road Summer Festival takes place on Sunday 12 July from 11am on Northcote Road in Battersea, London. Entry is free and open access, with the event aimed at residents, visitors, families and anyone planning a weekend visit to the high street.

Northcote Road goes traffic-free for the summer

Wandsworth Borough Council has confirmed that weekend pedestrianisation will return to Northcote Road from Saturday 11 July and continue until the late August bank holiday weekend.

The road will be closed to traffic every Saturday and Sunday from 6am to 10pm, creating a pedestrian-friendly space through one of Battersea’s best-known local shopping streets. Restaurants and cafés will be able to use street space for additional outdoor seating, while local shops remain part of the weekend draw.

The arrangement was first introduced in 2020 and 2021 to support businesses during the pandemic. According to the council, it proved popular with both residents and businesses, and its return has again been welcomed locally.

David Shaw, who runs The Flower Stand, said the pedestrianisation “brings a whole new lease of life” to the area.

Festival day begins at 11am on Sunday 12 July

The summer season formally opens with the Northcote Road Summer Festival on Sunday 12 July. The confirmed start time is 11am, with the festival centred on Northcote Road itself.

The source material highlights three main reasons to go: al fresco dining, local shops and a traffic-free environment. The council has not provided a detailed performance schedule, stall list or booking process, so visitors should plan around the confirmed open-access format rather than reserved entry.

For families, the main appeal is likely to be the change in how the street works for the day. With vehicles removed from the road during the closure window, the area becomes easier to walk through, meet friends in and use as a weekend destination.

Councillor Tom Pridham, Cabinet Member for Opportunity, described Northcote Road as “the vibrant heart of the community” and said the scheme was intended to support local businesses while making the street a destination for residents and visitors.

What visitors need to know before travelling

The practical change is not limited to festival day. From 11 July until the late August bank holiday weekend, Northcote Road will be closed to vehicles from 6am to 10pm every Saturday and Sunday.

Transport for London will redirect impacted bus routes during the closures, including the 319 and 219. Buses that normally use Northcote Road will be redirected along Bolingbroke Grove.

Temporary northbound stops will be opposite 99 Bolingbroke Grove and opposite Cobham Close. Temporary southbound stops will be outside 102 Bolingbroke Grove and outside Cobham Close.

Wandsworth Borough Council says changes to bus schedules can be found on TfL’s website. The confirmed visitor basics are straightforward: free entry, open access, Northcote Road as the venue, and an 11am start for the Northcote Road Summer Festival on Sunday 12 July.
