Award-winning Filipiñana comes to UK cinemas this November

Film enthusiasts across the UK and Ireland have a new date for their diaries. BFI Distribution has confirmed that the acclaimed feature debut Filipiñana, directed by Rafael Manuel, will arrive in cinemas on 20 November 2026. The film, which has already garnered significant international attention, marks the expansion of Manuel’s vision from his earlier, award-winning short film into a full-length feature.

A striking debut from a major new talent

The narrative follows Isabel, a 17-year-old from the rural north of the Philippines, who secures a position as a ‘tee-girl’ at an elite country club outside Manila. Her role involves lining up golf balls for the club’s affluent members, placing her in a unique position to observe the complex social dynamics between the guests and the subservient staff. As she navigates the immaculate grounds, Isabel attempts to return a mislaid golf club to the director, Dr. Palanca. This simple act serves as a catalyst for a deeper, more unsettling exploration of the club’s hidden realities, the broader context of the Philippines, and the protagonist’s own past.

Festival success and creative development

Filipiñana has established a strong reputation on the international festival circuit. It premiered in competition at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where it was awarded the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award for Creative Vision. Its European premiere followed in the Perspectives section of the 76th Berlin International Film Festival.

The project is a significant evolution of Manuel’s 2020 short film of the same name, which won the Silver Bear for Best Short Film at the Berlin International Film Festival. The feature-length screenplay was originally penned by Manuel while he was a student at the London Film School. The production gained further momentum through the involvement of acclaimed Chinese filmmaker Jia Zhangke, who joined as an executive producer after mentoring Manuel. The film is a collaborative international production involving the Philippines, Singapore, the UK, France, and the Netherlands, with development and co-financing support from Film4.
